Knowledge exchange in research

We view knowledge exchange as research-based dialogue with people active in the political, business, and public administration sectors, in art and culture, and in civil society. Research results are developed cooperatively or co-creatively with non-university practitioners and applied to non-scientific contexts. We enrich existing research through empirical engagement with society and encourage the exploration of new research topics.

This form of knowledge exchange is carried out by the faculty’s researchers through (externally funded) research projects, applied and contract research activities, in real-world laboratories, or in their roles as reviewers and experts.

Earth and Society Research Hub (ESRAH)

The Earth and Society Research Hub (ESRAH) is an interdisciplinary research centre. Its research takes an interdisciplinary approach and aims to understand the ongoing social, political and economic transformations of modern societies in relation to issues of sustainability and climate change.

The healthcare system is constantly evolving. To help tackle the challenges facing healthcare, over 90 researchers at the Hamburg Center for Health Economics (HCHE) are working on solutions to current and future issues. The aim is to take a multifaceted approach to health policy issues.

Third-party funded projects with a focus on knowledge exchange

Academics from the faculty make important contributions to public debate and practical applications through individual and externally funded research projects. ChemKom - Science communication on forever chemicals

The project ChemKom aims to investigate organisational science communication in and across different arenas using the example of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl compounds (PFAS) - also known as “forever chemicals” due to their non-degradability.

FlexCity in partnership with Ankerplatz Stade e.V.

As part of the FlexCity project, Ankerplatz Stade e. V. will receive support from July 2024 onwards to revitalise the role of marketplaces as meeting places and social spaces for interaction. Vacant spaces will be transformed into urban villages. The aim is to make city centres more liveable through a win-win collaboration.

Impact Measurement and Valuation Lab

The joint research project between the University of Hamburg and LMU Munich (Prof. Dr. Ali Aslan Gümüsay, Dr. Amyn Vogel) aims to systematically analyse the measurement of the impact of social innovations and to provide resources to enhance transparency regarding their impact.

Network for fruit-growing soils in the Altes Land (WEBB)

The objective of the WEBB project is to create a space, in the spirit of a real-world laboratory, where this diverse body of knowledge can be gathered, shared and expanded. In doing so, farmers, students, researchers and representatives of authorities will evaluate existing knowledge from multiple perspectives and acquire new insights.

WISDOM - knowledge exchange as a wicked problem

Based on the structural realities of society, the WISDOM project conceptualises knowledge transfer as a wicked problem which, as such, requires a self-reflective approach on the part of the scientific community, because in order to manage crises, the communication risks between science, politics and the media must be addressed.
