Office of the Dean

The Office of the Dean heads the Faculty. It consists of a dean and vice deans. The Dean is elected by the Faculty Council on the recommendation(s) of a selection committee. The dean nominates candidates for election as vice deans by the Faculty Council. The dean serves a term of 5 years. Vice deans serve for 3 to 5 years. The Faculty manager participates in meetings held by the Office of the Dean in an advisory capacity.

The Office of the Dean performs for the following tasks:

The Office of the Dean is responsible for the Faculty’s strategic development with the active involvement of Faculty members. It acts in consultation with the Faculty Council and the Faculty Committee. Pursuant to Section 90 of the Hamburg higher education act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG), the Office of the Dean is responsible, inter alia, for managing the budgetary funds allocated to the Faculty by the Executive University Board, deciding on the allocation of Faculty positions, reviewing the future use of vacant or soon-to-be vacant professorships and junior professorships based on the University’s Structure and Development Plan, and ruling on teaching obligations. The Office of the Dean outlines proposals for awarding professors performance-related bonuses, initiating retention negotiations and enhancing Faculty organization.

The Office of the Dean provides the Faculty Council an annual report and statement of accounts.
