Honorary doctorates 2020
On 3 December, both of the faculty’s honorary doctorates were awarded to recognize outstanding academic achievement. Recipients were Prof. Pratima Bansal, PhD (Ivey Business School, Canada) and Prof. Dr. Andreas Scherer (University of Zurich, Switzerland). The online awards ceremony, organized by the Graduate School and hosted by Prof. Dr. Timo Busch, director of the Graduate School, opened with addresses by Prof. Dr. Jetta Frost, vice president of Universität Hamburg, and Prof. Dr. Cord Jakobeit, dean of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences.
Prof. Dr. Dirk Ulrich Gilbert and Prof. Dr. Kerstin Lopatta gave the subsequent laudatory speeches. Prof. Bansal and Prof. Scherer were recognized for their outstanding academic contributions to an area that has been significant to the Department of Socioeconomics and the faculty in the last few years, namely, the academic and interdisciplinary question of sustainability and corporate responsibility.
“He is among the internationally leading scholars in the fields of research on management and organizations, corporate social responsibility, and business ethics, and has made path-breaking contributions to globalization issues and the political role of the corporation,” noted Gilbert, highlighting Scherer’s international significance in the field of organization research and corporate responsibility. “She has published more than 20 papers in top-tier journals; she always demonstrates the highest quality of research,” said Lopatta of Bansal’s internationally outstanding research in the field of socioeconomic sustainability.
Prof. Jakobeit awarded the certificates for the honorary doctorates. The ceremony closed with talks by the honorees and discussions with doctoral and early career researchers at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences at Universität Hamburg.

Graduate School 2019 graduation ceremony
The Graduate School’s graduation ceremony 2019 took place on June 21, 2019 in the atrium of the Hamburg State and University Library. Everyone who has been doing his doctorate since June 2018, members of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences and anyone interested were cordially invited.
