We are delighted that you are interested in doing the Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Public and Nonprofit Studies at the University of Hamburg. You can start here every winter semester. For the winter semester, we must receive your online application through the University of Hamburg's application portal by the application deadline (application period: 1 may - 15 june).
Admission requirements
1. University degree
The following special admission requirements apply to the consecutive Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Public and Nonprofit Studies:
Applicants must demonstrate a first higher education degree that meets one of the following three criteria:
1. in the Bachelor of Arts in Socioeconomics (BA) at the University of Hamburg or
2. in a comparable interdisciplinary socio-economic degree program or
3. in business administration, political science, law, social sciences, sociology, or economics.
In exceptional cases, graduates of other academic degree programs may be admitted to the extent that any such program provides a meaningful basis for the Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Public and Nonprofit Studies.
If you have completed a first degree in the calendar year but do not yet have a degree certificate with the required GPA, you may still apply to the degree program by submitting a current transcript of records containing your current average grade as well as written confirmation from the examinations board at your institution that you are expected to have taken any outstanding examinations required for you to pass your degree before the master's program begins.
In such cases, the degree certificate must be submitted without delay. If the degree certificate cannot be submitted by the time of admission, conditional admission will be granted on the provision that you submit your certificate by the end of the first semester (31 March).
If the transcript of records does not show a GPA, enclose the examinations office's confirmation of your current GPA with the application. Your current GPA is mandatory for the selection procedure. We do not accept GPAs calculated by the applicants themselves.
2. Proof of English proficiency
You must submit informal confirmation with your application that you have sufficient English language skills. Use the sample text below, add your personal information, and sign a copy in your own hand.

3. Proof of proficiency in German (foreign students only)
Good German language skills are required for the Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Public and Nonprofit Studies. If you did not obtain your higher education entrance eligibility at a German-speaking school, you must submit a language certificate confirming sufficient German language skills at the latest upon enrollment. Thelegal basis for this is Section 3 of the University admission bylaws.
However, written confirmation that you demonstrate the requisite level of German language proficiency will suffice for the purposes of the application (pursuant to the regulations above, see Section 3 of the University admission bylaws, UniZS). Use the sample text below, add your personal information, and sign a copy in your own hand.
"I hereby confirm that I have sufficient knowledge of the German language in accordance with the provisions of Section 3 of the University admission bylaws. I am aware that I will have to submit the required proof during the enrollment process.

TestAS is not required for the application.
Selection criteria
If the number of applicants meeting the special admission requirements exceeds the number of places available for the Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Public and Nonprofit Studies, the following criteria will be considered. Please submit the required proof together with your application by the deadline:
1. Result of the first university degree (up to a maximum of 50 points);
2. Result of the higher education entrance eligibility (HZB) or, if you studied without a high school diploma, the result of the entrance examination (up to a maximum of 16 points);3. Result of the final thesis if the thesis title has a focus on a public and/or nonprofit studies (up to a maximum of 16 points). If the relevant thesis topic has been duly documented but the final grade for the thesis is not available, 7 points are granted.4. A bachelor's degree, e.g., in socioeconomics that include demonstrable courses in public or nonprofit studies: Bonus points are awarded for a maximum of 3 courses passed in public or nonprofit studies, irrespective of grades. One bonus point is awarded for each credit point earned per course, with up to 6 bonus points per course. A total of 18 points can be awarded for this criterion.Points are awarded for each of these criteria according to the following table. A total score is calculated from this (max. 100 points).
(Note: Other final grades shall be converted into points through linear interpolation.
Available places shall be awarded using the aggregate score calculated for the applicants. In case of the same score, a lottery will decide on admission.
The selection committee may delegate all or part of the evaluation of the selection criteria to the chair.
Application process: deadlines, documents, and records
Applications must be submitted online via the University of Hamburg's application portal.
- Set up an applicant account.
- Complete the online form. You can log in again at any time during the application period.
- Upload the required documents or proof in the "Upload documents" section (see below).
Note the following when uploading documents:
- Merge all documents that consist of several pages, e.g., the transcript of records, into a single file.
- The documents/files should preferably be uploaded as a PDF . This is ensures that they can be opened and displayed correctly.
- Only one file can be uploaded in each upload category.
- In the event of technical difficulties, please contact the Regional Computing Center using the STiNE support form in the application procedure.
Required documents in the "Upload documents" section
- proof of higher education entrance eligibility (e.g., Abitur, entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences, master craftsman's examination, the result of the entrance examination, etc.)
- first university diploma as an uncertified copy (if degree certificate is not yet available, a transcript of records/official transcript of grades incl. GPA).
- Indicate on the transcript of records those courses/modules in public or nonprofit studies you can prove you attended.
- If applicable,upload proof of your thesis with a focus on public and/or nonprofit studies (e.g., assessment of your final thesis, degree certificate, transcript of records, or document clearly indicating the grade and title of your final thesis). If the relevant thesis topic has been duly documented, upload proof.
- informal written confirmation of applicant’s English proficiency
- tabular CV—
- only for those applicants who have not earned their higher education entrance eligibility or who have not completed their first degree in Germany Upload the recognized language certificate in German or an informal, signed declaration of your German language skills (a form can be found on the course website). The necessary language certificate is not due until you enroll in the degree program (usually around September). Contact the Campus Center if you have questions.
- Only for applicants with a first degree from a university outside Germany:If the degree was not earned in Germany and not issued in German or English, you must provide a translation. The certified version must be submitted when you enroll (usually in September) at the latest. Add an explanation of the grading system (extracts/copies from the internet or other sources are acceptable).
Deadlines
Applications can be submitted only within the official application deadline. Documents that have not been uploaded to the application portal in the official application period (1 June–15 July) cannot be considered in the application process.
Hardship application and reasonable accommodations
Applicants with disabilities or with care responsibilities for children and relatives can submit a hardship application or an application reasonable accommodations (Campus Center, Alsterterasse 1).

Acceptance and rejection letters
The acceptance and rejection letters will be made available to you in your STiNE account under “Documents” together with the enrollment application. Please check your account on the dates provided by the Service for Students.
You then have to submit your completed enrollment application including the documents stated in the letter of admission to the Services for Students by the given deadline. If you miss this deadline, you will no longer be entitled to the place you have been offered!
