Due to COVID-19, this year’s VHB conference was entirely digital. Ali Aslan Gümüsay acted as session chair and presented a working paper co-authored with Laura Claus and John Amis on “Engaging Grand Challenges through a Transformative Institutional Logics Perspective”.
They state that the world is full of grand challenges which an institutional logics perspective is, in principle, well-positioned to address. However, they find that this perspective lacks certain considerations that limit its explanatory potential. In the article, they ask how it can better engage with grand challenges? To respond to this question, they argue for four meta-reflections around macro-level positioning, contextuality, temporality, and value plurality. They then link these reflections to the notion of grand challenges, present implications for engaging climate change, and advocate for a transformative institutional logics perspective.
