Daniel Geiger was one of three convenors, together with Maria Booth (University of Jönköping) and Waldemar Kremser (JKU Linz) at the Sub-Theme "Routines Dynamics: Enacting and Crossing Boundaries.” This group discussed how routines are enacted and transferred across different institutional, organizational and group boundaries. He also delivered a keynote on the methodological and ethical challenges of collecting data in extreme contexts based on his experiences of working with firefighters, doing studies in refugee camps and in the Ebola epidemic.

2nd Workshop: Doing Research in Extreme Environments 2016 - Umeå, Sweden
This workshop in the Organizing in Extreme Contexts series focused on the methodological and ethical considerations associated with doing research in extreme contexts. Extreme contexts include ‘risks of severe physical, psychological or material consequences…to organizational members or their constituents’ (Hannah et al., 2009). The Ebola virus epidemic in West Africa, the resurgence of ideological extremism, and the accidental death of climbers in Nepal are recent examples. Because of the risk of the researchee and the researcher, the inability to predict significant events, and the not so uncommon inaccessibility, extreme environments pose significant methodological and ethical challenges – but also opportunities – for the one pursuing such an avenue. The workshop therefore included but was not limited to questions such as: How to access an extreme environment? When does the danger justify the benefit? How to study the extreme practice?
Reflecting, and providing an answer to these, and other questions associated to the topic is pertinent in advancing the knowledge not only about extreme environments per se, but also, more importantly, about larger questions within organization theory. By reflecting about these larger questions the community of scholars aimed at providing a counter-point towards other forms of theorizing that can be mirrored and compared.

International Workshop: Strategizing and Organizing in Extreme Contexts 2014 - Montréal, Canada
In a global world characterized by uncertainty and ambiguity, managers, workers and stakeholders have to deal with extreme and risky situations that can provoke loss or damage, directly (material, people) or indirectly (human health, economic situation, etc). Examples are major political or financial collapses, disasters, catastrophic environmental accidents, risk-taking expedition and rescue work, emergency situations and so on. Given that these contexts are outside the boundaries of “normal” conditions, practitioners have to perform their tasks in contexts of heightened stress and pressure; moreover, they must rely on their skills, their expertise and their imagination to achieve great performances in spite of difficult, complex or unpredictable circumstances.
These contexts therefore represent a stimulating and relevant opportunity to develop better understandings of how strategizing and organizing are accomplished in day-to-day activities and practices. Yet, despite this potential, practice researchers have until now paid only scant attention to these contexts, preferring to investigate conventional corporate and organizational settings.
The Workshop hence offered the occasion to reflect both on the particularities of these contexts, and on their implications in terms of organized action. It was devoted to sharing theoretical and methodological expertise related to the challenges and opportunities of doing research in extreme contexts with a practice lens.

AOM Annual Meeting 2014 - Philadelphia, USA
This year´s Academy of Management Conference dealt with the topic "The Power of Words". The theme encouraged us to consider the effect of words – our words and others’ -- on individuals, teams, organizations nations or even global systems. It allowed us in understanding how discourse shapes practices and organizations. Words -- in the broad way the term is used here -- can take the form of spoken utterances, written text, or symbols. The Academy of Management values high quality research, teaching and practice in the field of management and organization. It provides a dynamic and supportive community for all its members, embracing the full diversity of their backgrounds and experiences. Therefore we were very honored to present our work:
- Kazakova, T./Geiger, D.: "The Complexity of Simple Rules: A Concept of Organizational Heuristics in Strategic Decision Making“
- Geiger, D./Schröder, A.: “Toward a Communicative Understanding of Routines between Rule-Text and Rule-Performance”
SMS Special Conference 2014 - Copenhagen, Denmark
During this year´s Strategic Management Society Special Conference a range of established scholars and practitioners gathered to advance a new understanding of micro-foundations. The mixture of specialist tracks on “decision-making and managers,” “entrepreneurship,” “strategic human resources” “methodological issues”, with panels and keynote talks allowed for the examination of the challenges to strategic management theory, empirics and teaching represented by micro-foundations. The SMS is involved in the publication of leading journals and innovative books, which for more than three decades have been vital tools for the benefit of researchers and practitioners in the field. We had the opportunity to present and discuss our latest insights on strategic decision-making in a common ground session:
- Kazakova, T./Geiger, D.: "The Complexity of Simple Rules: The Micro Foundations of Organizational Heuristics in Strategic Decision Making"
EGOS Conference 2014 - Rotterdam, Netherlands
