Title: "Colonial continuities or pragmatism? Taxation and Social Policy in Subsaharan Africa"
Abstract:
That there are considerable welfare state dynamics on the African continent is not so known. That they have roots in colonial times, might even sound counter-intuitive. This presentation will give an overview about welfare state development on the African continent, also in relation to taxation policies and state dynamics in general. What is driving and hindering the expansion of social policy in African settings? What is the role of international institutions and the famous “donors” in these dynamics?
