Sociology offers a bachelor’s degree as well as a consecutive master’s program, and the social sciences is also a subject in the teacher training degree (BA and MEd). The degree programs are research oriented and impart current developments in the international discourse on the subject.

Political science offers a bachelor’s degree as well as a consecutive master’s program in the subject. The goal is to impart the fundamental knowledge, methods, and theories of political science. During their studies, students develop a sound knowledge of political institutions, policy areas, and political processes at the community, national, and regional level, as well as at the transnational and international level.

Criminology is the study of society from the perspective of its margins, abysses, violations, and threats. This reveals genuinely social processes of demarcation and differentiation, inclusion and exclusion, normalization and stabilization, and the establishment of law and order. In the supposed extremes that we refer to as terrorism, hate crimes, and refugee crises, and in the political response to them, society reveals what it really is and how it is formed. Criminology focuses on questions of current and future sociality under conditions of insecurity and radical uncertainty.

The journalism and mass communication subject group takes an academic approach to public media communications, with a particular focus on the role of journalism in the world of digital media.

Education in this field is based on the principle of professionalization through science and scholarship. We see academic findings in journalism and mass communication as useful in professional journalism. This includes empirical findings on audiences and their media preferences. We also want our students to conduct quality journalism.
