Violence and security research

The members of the profile initiative investigate questions of security and insecurity against the backdrop of growing political and societal polarisation, rapid digital transformation, increasing uncertainty, and an intensifying extinction of natural resources.

Research projects

Researchers in the Department of Social Sciences (SoWi) contribute to the following DFG-funded collaborative programmes and are successful in ERC-funded projects. In addition, individual researchers have conducted many other projects, details can be found on the respective professorship or personal pages.

Research Seminar and centers involving the Department of Social Sciences

Research centers and seminars promote scientific exchange and interdisciplinary research. The now cross-faculty research center, the ‘Earth and Society Research Hub’ (ESRAH), was co-founded by researchers, especially from the subject area of Sociology. The research seminar ‘Hamburg Political Science Seminar Series (HPS³)’ is run by the subject area of Political Science.

Doctorate and Habilitation

Early career researchers can obtain a doctorate or a postdoctoral qualification (Habilitation) from the Department of Social Sciences. They are organizationally affiliated with one of the professorships. PhD students are supported by the faculty's Graduate School and can benefit from a variety of courses offered by the Graduate School, as well as events organized by the university or external providers.
