Concentrate on the essentials
Combine the advantages of the large and internationally renowned University of Excellence Hamburg with the amenities of a small, informal degree program. Thirty master's students (for the Wintersemester 2025/2026 intake: 40 students) can expect an intensive course of study and excellent supervision. You have personal contact with the teachers. Small groups ensure intensive supervision.
Choose your own focus.
The HEHCM master's program is an opportunity to develop your own profile. In the specialization area, you can freely choose or combine courses in health economics and health care management:
Health economics—If you have a scientific interest in health economics issues and would like to pursue work in ministries, authorities, associations, or economic research institutes, health economics is just right for you. The field focuses on the health-care system from an economic perspective. Issues concern, for example, structuring health-care, e.g., the remuneration of service providers or the regulation of the health-care system as part of social security systems.
Health care management—If you would prefer to deal with business management issues in the health-care sector from a scientific perspective and wish to work in hospitals, health insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, medical technology, and their associations, you should focus on health care management. You can combine industry-specific management courses with specialist courses such as marketing, controlling, or technology and innovation management to better solve the challenges faced by companies in the health-care market.
This involves health topics combined with subject-specific events such as marketing, controlling, and technology and innovation management.
Big, bigger, big data!
Can we still afford our health-care? Will more people be in need of long-term care in the future? Are medicines too expensive or how efficient is the health-care system? Complex data sets and their analysis are the be-all and end-all of health economics. We therefore assume that you bring good knowledge of mathematics, statistics, and microeconomics to your master's program. This is exactly what our methods courses are based on: Methods of Empirical Research, Advanced Econometrics, Microeconomics and Decision Theory.
Get out of the ivory tower!
In your Master of Science in Health Economics, you will benefit from the proximity to research and the capacities that the HCHE has to offer as well as the HCHE's excellent contacts in the health-care industry. Our courses regularly provide a stage for practitioners so that you can become familiar with the health-care sector from both an academic and practical perspective.
Change your perspective!
How is the health-care system analyzed in Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Austria, or Italy and what can we learn from this?
In the third semester of your master's program, you can study abroad and benefit from the close cooperation between the HCHE and renowned partner universities in Oslo, Odense, Rotterdam, Linz, and Bologna.
