Before the start of the semester
The Academic Office supports you as lecturers in planning and conducting your courses and examinations. At this point you will find important information on the following topics/key points:
Course planning
Notes on set timeframes
To facilitate planning and the use of the central lecture halls, so-called “standing bookings” will be implemented starting in winter semester 2023/24 in coordination with the dean of studies offices of the different faculties.
Standing bookings are courses that regularly recur, that are central to the mandatory curriculum and are held at the same time over the course of several semesters or years. The concept will be trialed starting winter semester 2023/2024 for a two-year pilot phase.
The courses from the BA Socioeconomics and the MSc Innovation, Business and Sustainability that are mentioned here will be regularly offered during the listed set timeframes.
- If multiple courses are offered as part of one course offering (e.g. GK Soziologie 1-3), please confirm the use of set timeframes with the responsible head of the respective discipline (Fachgebietsbetreuung).
Set timefrages - winter term
Set timeframes - summer term
Notes on permitted types of examination
The subject-specific provisions determine which types of examinations can be selected for each course.
If allowed in the subject-specific provisions, papers and presentation and paper as well as written and oral examinations can be offered concurrently for the BA Socioeconomics. In this case, student have the right to choose which type of examination they wish to register for.
Notes on the submission deadline for term papers, presentations with a written paper, oral examinations etc.
Criteria for deadlines
The deadline should:
- Not be on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday due to organizational issues
- Be during the semester in which the course is offered
- Be early enough that students can receive their grade in time for the registration phase for the next semester
Notes on deadlines for withdrawal for term papers, presentations with a written paper, oral examinations etc.
Independent withdrawal by students in STiNE. In general it is not possible for individual students to withdraw from examinations through the Academic Office.
Written examinations and take-home exams: withdrawal up to 72 hours before the examination date.
Other examination types - term papers, presentations with a written paper, oral examinations etc.:
- You can indicate a deadline by which students can independently withdraw from term papers, presentations with a written paper, oral examinations etc. For instance, if you don’t share the topics a term paper (=start of the processing time) until the end of a course, you can make it possible for students to withdraw from the examination until this point.
If you do not indicate a withdrawal deadline, it will only be possible for students to withdraw up until the end of the official Changes and Correction period in STiNE.
Notes on online examinations
Please note that it is voluntary for students to participate in online examinations (that take place digitally rather than in person or on paper) as per § 13 Abs. 9 of the examination regulations. This is because online examinations could violate the private sphere of students as they utilize the internet and/or in some cases collect audio and video data.
As such, if you offer an online examination, you should make this known to students in good time, so that they have time to state their requirements. For instance, this could be that a room or electronic device is made available on campus, so that the examination doesn’t have to be taken in their “private sphere.” As a standard, the examination regulations require that a non-digital alternative is offered, if possible at the same time.
