This year, the annual Academy of Management Conference, which was themed “Understanding the Inclusive Organization” took place from 9.-13. August in Boston (USA). The Academy of Management is the world’s largest management conference that attracts more than 12.000 scholars each year. Papers that are invited for presentation undergo a rigorous blind peer review process and only 40% of the submitted papers are actually accepted. The team of the Chair for Organization Studies was invited to present two papers during the conference that reflect our research on routines and emergencies. Philipp Darkow and Daniel Geiger presented their paper on “Crafting Space: The Role of Spatial Practices in Managing Refugee Camps”. In the paper we study how humanitarian aid organizations enact specific boundary setting practices to coordinate and control their work in refugee camps. Jan Hoekzema and Daniel Geiger presented a paper on “Disentangling Routine Interdependence: Blurry Boundaries and Dynamic Patterning”. The paper explores how routine boundaries are enacted and changed and highlights the importance of granularity for our study of routine dynamics.
