On his recent visit in February, Professor Geiger finalized a memorandum of understanding with the University of Hamburg and the Uganda Management Institute. The aim of the cooperation is to jointly develop a curriculum for Disaster Management taught at UMI in Kampala. This course, supported by the Office of the Prime Minister of Uganda and the Minister for Disaster Response, will be tailored to the needs of practitioners working in disaster management. Since Uganda, due to climate change and a continuous influx of refugees is expecting an increasing number of natural as well as human induced disasters, effective disaster management is a key focus of government and civil society. The program results from a research project on coordinating emergencies which Professor Geiger and his team has conducted in 2017 in Northern Uganda. The study program is a good showcase to demonstrate that our research has – beyond its academic merits – a strong impact on capacity building and civil society.
