AWG MASTER'S PROGRAM—IF YOU WANT TO FORM SOCIETY, YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND IT
What are the societal consequences of economic activity and how does society influence economic activity? Today more than ever, we need researchers who take time to reflect and make critical observations with the aim analyzing societal changes from an economic and sociological perspective.
"The Labor, Economics and Society degree program provides me with a unique opportunity to look at work, the economy, and society from a multidisciplinary perspective. The combination of economic and sociological studies enables students to analyze and understand complex social and economic phenomena." Moritz at Studycheck on 2 July 2023
Theory, methods, practice—in interdisciplinary discourse
The methods module is an important part of the master's program. You will look in depth at social and economic issues and therefore need broad, sound knowledge of methods, both quantitative and qualitative. You can use your new knowledge in your own research project and gain valuable professional skills.
Start your own research!
The outstanding feature and core of our master's program is our research workshop. You can work on your own research topics here for 2 semesters. You choose your topic, develop a concept, decide on a method, and carry out your first own research project. Two lecturers supervise your work. They work in sociology and economics and offer advice based on their own comprehensive methodological expertise.
Double insight
Another special feature of the master's program at the University of Hamburg is the parity of disciplines. In your required courses, you will look equally at topics, theories, and methods from sociology and economics. The interdisciplinary perspective broadens your horizons and encourages a critical examination of various economic and sociological models of thought.
