FAQs
How can I participate in an experiment?
To be able to participate in an experiment, you must register for the experiment in question via your hroot account. The WISO Research Lab sends regular invitations to take part in new experiments. You can register using the link in the email. Alternatively, you can register directly via your hroot account. You can register to take part in an experiment as long as places are still available. If all places are booked, you can sign up for the waiting list. You will then be notified by email as soon as places in the experiment become available.
How can I register?
- You enter the registration area using the “To hroot registration” link.
- Register there using your @uni-hamburg.de address. You will then receive an activation link. Click on this link to confirm your email address.
- If you do not have a Universität Hamburg email address, another email address can be used.

If you do not wish to receive invitations by email, you can deactivate the invitation dispatch in your hroot account. You can still register directly for experiments using your hroot account.
What do participants have to do?
The participants perform tasks on the computer during the experiment. These tasks vary from experiment to experiment so that decisions are made in a wide variety of situations. You will be informed about the precise task and decision-making situation at the start of each experiment.
Why do I have to enter my name and student ID number / address when registering?
The data gathered in hroot is used exclusively for the organization of scientific experiments. This data will not be passed on to third parties.
We use the data for the following purposes:
- to inform the participants about new experiments and to invite them to take part; you can deactivate the receipt of email invitations to participate in experiments in your hroot account at any time
- to select participants for certain experiments on the basis of scientific criteria
- to check whether registered participants turn up or fail to turn up for experiments
There is no link between the data generated during experiments and the data in the registration and administrative system. If you do not want to perform certain tasks, leave the corresponding fields blank when registering. However, your chances of being invited to take part in an experiment increase if you provide additional information.
Why do I have to send in my university's enrolment certificate?
Only persons who are enrolled as students at a university may register and participate in experiments This student status is proven by sending your official enrollment certificate.
Am I allowed to register under a different name or with fictional information?
No! Each person is only allowed to register once in hroot, as it would otherwise be possible to take part in the same experiment multiple times. This is categorically forbidden for scientific reasons and is permitted by the WISO Research Lab in exceptional cases only. A person who registers using different hroot accounts in the course of several sessions will be deregistered and barred from taking part in future experiments, insofar as this did not occur by mistake.

Do I get paid for participating in the experiments? How much does one earn?
You will be paid every time you take part in an experiment. The amount of payment is performance-based and depends on your decisions and the decisions made by the other participants. For scientific reasons, we do not provide precise information about the exact amount that can be expected or the upper and lower limits. These vary from experiment to experiment. The long-term average payment is €10 per hour. You will be paid in cash and given a receipt directly upon completion of the experiment.
All persons who are registered for an experiment and arrive on time will receive a punctuality bonus of €5 if they cannot take part in the experiment due to overbooking.

You can sign the data protection declaration when you take part in an experiment for the first time and give it directly to the laboratory personnel. The form is provided in the laboratory when you participate in the experiment.
Am I obliged to turn up when I receive an invitation to take part in an experiment?
If you accept the invitation to take part in an experiment, the registration is a binding commitment to appear on time on the specified date. However, you can cancel your registration up to 24 hours before the start of the experiment via your hroot account.
We reserve the right to exclude participants from taking part in all other experiments if they fail to appear for an experiment for which they have registered a total of 3 times without a plausible reason.
I have registered for an experiment and am now unable to register for the other dates and times as these have disappeared.
You many only register for a single date and time per experiment. After you have registered, the other dates and times for the same experiment disappear from the list.
Why are all places booked when I try to register?
The invitation emails are send in batches, so it is possible that other members of the pool have already received the invitation and have already registered for all of the places. If all places in the experiment are booked, you can add your name to our waiting list. As soon as places become available, you will be notified by email and be given the chance to register.
Why haven’t I received an invitation for quite some time now?
Depending on the experiment, we require different groups of participants that fulfill different prerequisites. The more information you provide in your hroot account, the better we can manage the invitation process. Furthermore, some experiments require a random selection of participants, and it can happen that some participants receive random invitations more often. Unfortunately, this cannot be avoided. Past experience has shown that all participants receive approximately the same number of invitations over the course of a year.
How can I cancel my registration for an experiment?
You can cancel your registration up to 24 hours before the start of the experiment via your hroot account. In the event that you cannot take part in an experiment for health reasons or due to special circumstances, please inform us at experiments.wiso"AT"uni-hamburg.de.
How can I completely delete my registration?
Participants can decide at any time that they no longer want to take part in experiments at all and that their hroot account should be permanently deactivated or deleted. Simply send an informal email to WISO Research Lab’s official email account (experiments.wiso"AT"uni-hamburg.de).
