History of JKW

1919	Founding of the University of Hamburg Compared to other European universities, the UHH was founded relatively late.
1982/83	Launch of the Journalism module 1982: The course was established, specifically the Journalism module, which could be studied either as a minor subject within the Master’s degree or as an additional subject in diploma programmes or alongside the state examination. In 1982/83, teaching began in earnest.
1982-2001	Professorship Dieter Roß
1989	Founding of the Institute The Institute was established in 1989 following a resolution by the Academic Senate. It was officially recognised by the authorities in 1990.

2001	Launch of the Master’s degree programme with a major and a minor JKW
2006	The former Magister degree programme is phased our to be replaced by the current Master’s degree programme in "Journalism and Communication Studies" Launch of the Erasmus Mundus Master’s programme, an internationally oriented programme recognised by the EU
2007	Launch of funding for the Cluster of Excellence in Climate Research (CliSAP)
