General questions about the program
When does the program start?
The program starts in the winter semester; i.e. October. There is only one intake per year. The application period runs from 15 February to 31 March.
How many study places are available in MIBAS?
In 2025, we will offer 95 study places.
In the selection process, 50% of the places are allocated to 'foreign students', 50% are allocated to 'domestic students'. Please check our information about the selection criteria or your chances for admission for further information.
Can I switch from another Master's Program to MIBAS?
If you consider switching from another master’s program to MIBAS, you’d have to follow the regular application process. Your application will be evaluated based on the defined standard criteria. Your current master’s studies will not be considered within the admission process.
Once you have been admitted to the program and once you are enrolled as a student at the university, you may apply for recognition of external achievements.
Is part-time study possible?
Yes, you can study this master’s degree part-time. Detailed information about prerequisites, deadlines, the application procedure, and any exceptions is available on the university's Campus Centers website. Part-time degrees however, are not designed as evening and/or weekend programs. Our classes normally take place during the week between 8 am and 8 pm.
It is not necessary to announce that you would like to become a part-time student within the application.
Admission requirements
Do I need to prove German language proficiency?
You don't need to prove German language skills within the application, since MIBAS is taught in English. All applicants must have a very good command of English. The study aptitude tests, proof of which must be provided within the application (see Admissions), must be conducted in English.
I have not studied a Bachelor in Business Administration. Can I apply nevertheless?
Yes, it is possible to apply if you did not study Business Administration in your Bachelor's. A bachelor’s degree (at least 180 ECTS) in Socioeconomics or in a comparable interdisciplinary socio-economic degree program, Business Administration, Law, Social Sciences, Sociology, Economics or Business Studies is required for admission. In exceptional cases, graduates of other academic degree programs may also be admitted, provided that they can usefully build on their knowledge from their previous studies.
Students who have not yet received their bachelor's certificate can apply for MIBAS. Please hand in a confirmation from the examination office / the academic office, which states that you are able to finish your studies until the beginning of the master's program.
Is a GMAT / GRE /GTEBS (formerly TM-WISO) required for the application?
Yes, the GMAT (Focus Edition or 10th Edition), the GRE or the GTEBS (formerly TM-WISO) are required for your application.
A proof of completion of one of the following study aptitude tests is required within the application (see section Application documents for detailed information on the proof):
- Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) Focus Edition with a total score of at least 545 points
or - Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) 10th Edition with a total score of at least 570 points
or - Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test with a scaled score of at least 151 points in Verbal Reasoning and a scaled score of at least 156 points in Quantitative Reasoning
or - Graduate Test for programs in Economics, Business and Social Sciences (GTEBS; former name: TM-WISO (Test für Masterstudiengänge in den Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften)) with an achieved test value (standard value) of at least 95 points
In which language must the GMAT / the GRE / the GTEBS (formerly TM-WISO) be taken?
The test (GMAT, GRE or GTEBS (former name: TM-WISO)) must be taken in English. Tests that were taken in German will not be accepted as an alternative.
When should the GMAT / the GRE / the GTEBS (formerly TM-WISO) have been taken?
Proof of completion must be submitted by the end of the application deadline (i.e. March 31). The test (GMAT, GRE or GTEBS (former name: TM-WISO)) may not have been taken more than 5 years ago at the time of application to MIBAS.
Where can I receive information about the GMAT / the GRE / the GTEBS (formerly TM-WISO)?
Could you check my documents in advance and give feedback on my eligibilty?
Unfortunately, we cannot provide any information about individual eligibility in advance. The selection committee will assess all applications after the application deadline.
STiNE / Online application form
What is STiNE?
STiNE is Universität Hamburg’s academic information network and is an internet-based information and communication platform for degree programs and teaching. Application procedures at Universität Hamburg are processed through STiNE. Hence, in order for your application to be successful, you must register with STiNE.

Application documents
I have not yet completed my bachelor's degree. Can I apply nevertheless?
If you have recently completed your first degree but do not yet have your degree certificates, or if you have not yet completed your first degree, you may apply to MIBAS nevertheless.
To do so, you have to submit a current transcript of records containing your current grade point average as well as a written confirmation from the examinations office / academic office at your institution that you are expected to have sat any outstanding examinations required for you to pass your degree prior to commencement of the master’s program.
It is possible to submit your degree certificates at the latest by the end of the first semester (i.e. March 31).
Which kind of documents do I need in order prove to have taken the GMAT / the GRE / the GTEBS (formerly TM-WISO)?

Whether you take the exam at a test center or online, you will receive an email notification once your official score report is available in your mba.com account. You have to send your score to our school University of Hamburg (Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences) for our degree program MSc Innovation, Business, and Sustainability (MIBAS) via your mba.com account before the end of the MIBAS application period (March 31). -
Upload their official score report in the UHH’s online application portal when applying for MIBAS
You have to upload your official score report containing your total and section scores in the UHH’s online application portal. Since GMAC does not provide you a possibility to download a file with your official score report, you have to upload a screenshot/screengrab (image format: JPEG, PNG, GIF) in the UHH’s online application portal within the MIBAS application period from February 15 till March 31.

On test day, you can designate up to four graduate institutions or fellowship sponsors to receive your scores as part of your test fee (see details here). ETS will then send an official institution score report to the score recipients you designated. You have thus to designate to our school and program so that we receive your GRE General Test scores to us via ETS before the end of the MIBAS application period (March 31): 1936 - University of Hamburg MSc Innovation, Business, and Sustainability (MIBAS). - Upload their GRE General Test scores in the UHH’s online application portal when applying for MIBAS
ETS provides you a possibility to download a PDF file with your official score report. You have to upload your official score report containing your scores for Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning in the UHH’s online application portal within the MIBAS application period from February 15 till March 31.

Send their test results to us via ITB before the end of the MIBAS application period (March 31)
ITB will send a document with the results of your test to our university and program if you have agreed to this procedure with your registration (see details here). Thus, when registering, you must answer the question “Would you like your results to be sent automatically to a university or universities?” with “Yes, …” and then select our university (i.e. Universität Hamburg (MSc Innovation, Business and Sustainability (MIBAS)) under the question “To which university or universities would you like us to send your results?” Important: If you select theour university(ies) under the question “Which university or universities would you like to apply to?”, your results will not be sent automatically to us. - Upload their test report in the UHH’s online application portal when applying for MIBAS

Do I have to send any hard copies of documents to Universität Hamburg for the application?
No. All application documents must be submitted online via the application portal (STiNE).
Enrollment at Universität Hamburg will take place digitally. If you are admitted to MIBAS, you will receive the relevant information on the digital enrollment application with your admission letter. Documents sent in paper form by post will not be considered!
Are there any recommendations for the file format of the application documents?
Yes, in order to ensure that your documents can be displayed correctly, please take the following recommendations into account when uploading your application documents into the online portal:
- Please merge documents with several pages (e.g. your degree certificates) to one file.
- Documents have to be submitted in German or English. Please submit certified translations if original documents are not issued in German or English.
- Please upload preferably PDF documents.
- Only one file can be uploaded per upload category.
- In case of technical problems, please contact: application-mibas.wiso@uni-hamburg.de.
Application and admission process
Could you confirm that my application is complete?
As our capacities are restricted during the application period, we are not able to confirm the receipt or the completeness of your application documents.
Can I submit my application after the application deadline?
No. Applications for MIBAS have to be submitted to Universität Hamburg between 15 February and 31 March. We do not accept applications after this deadline.
When will I be informed about the admission results?
Admission results will be published around mid-May. You can find the exact date in the online application portal.
Letters of rejection / admission will be made available to you in your STiNE account under the menu item “Documents” together with the enrollment application. Please check your account on the date provided by the Service for Students.
Once you have been admitted, you will need to enroll until the deadline mentioned in the letter of admission.
If you miss this deadline, you will no longer be entitled to the place you have been offered!
Is there a minimum GPA required?
There is no minimum GPA required. For the selection of candidates, your GPA is an important criterium (please refer to the information about the selection procedure).
Last year, we received more than 1000 applications for 85 study places available. This means that admission is highly competitive, and high grades are important. It is also extremely important to ensure that you document that you meet the admission requirements in order for your application to be considered!
