Language Courses
The Sprachenzentrum of Universität Hamburg offers free language courses to students.
German Language Courses
For you as a guest student, German language courses might be particularly interesting. They are offered as intensive courses before the start of term, or during your term. You can find a list of all German courses here. If you have already successfully applied as a guest student, we will keep you up-to-date about any changes, deadlines and more information regarding German courses.
It is not obligatory to participate in German language courses, but we strongly recommend it to you if you are not yet confident in your use of the language. Not only will a better understanding make your studies easier, but it will also greatly help you in your daily life.
In order to successfully participate in any German taught subject at Universität Hamburg, you should at least have a B2 level. For the self-assessment of your language skills, the explanations of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) might be helpful.
If you want to expand your German language skills online, DUO is a very useful program. We especially recommend this for students who want to brush up on their German before coming to Hamburg, but cannot find a convenient language school in their home town.
Other Language Courses
If you want to take up a different language, you can also do so at Universität Hamburg.
