About Universität Hamburg

Universität Hamburg was founded by Wilhelm Stern and others on March 28th, 1919. It has its origins in the previous Allgemeines Vorlesungswesen and the Kolonialinstitut (Colonial Institute) as well as the Akademisches Gymnasium.

In spite of its relatively short history, 6 Nobel Prize winners and many notable scholars are affiliated with the university.

The University is located in Hamburg’s formerly Jewish “Grindel” quarter. This neighborhood formed the center of Jewish spiritual and social activities before this culture was brutally halted by the National Socialists. A painting done by students on the wall of the building Von-Melle-Park 9 is a sign of remembrance of life as it used to be and the destruction of Hamburg’s Jewish community.

Today, the campus and the “Grindel” pulsate with life. The central location offers many benefits – not just good public transportation connections, but also a broad range of bookshops, cafés, cinemas, restaurants and pubs that surround the university. Libraries, student restaurants and everything else a student needs are also located near the university campus.

The Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences and the University of Hamburg Business School are two out of eight faculties of Universität Hamburg. The Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences consists of 3 Departments: Economics, Socioeconomics and Social Sciences (Sociology/Journalism/Political Sciences). The University of Hamburg Business School offers programs in Business Administration (BWL).
