The Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences, Department of Socioeconomics is looking for a research associate (§ 28 subsection 3 HmbHG) for the Project „Big Stuctural Change (RU BISC)“. It is a part-time position (75 % of standard work hours per week), the salary level is EGR.13 TV-L. Start date is 01.05.2025, fixed until 31.12.2028 (This is a fixed-term contract in accordance with Section 2 of the academic fixed-term labor contract act [Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG]).
Your responsibilities
Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.
This position is part of the interdisciplinary DFG Research Unit “Big Structural Change” RU BISC. The research unit investigates the changing acceptance of and compliance with societal core institutions (e.g., formal rules and social norms) in the face of climate change, globalization & technological change, and mass migration. You will write three to four scientific papers in the field of environmental economics and political economy, present them at conferences and submit them for publication in international peer-reviewed journals. The focus is on the role of the perceived effectiveness of climate policies on the legitimacy of political institutions, and with a methodological focus on survey-based experiments. You participate at the regular meetings and workshops of RU BISC, ideally attend at least one summer school to further develop your methodological skills, and interact with the professor (primary advisor), with the other researchers in RU BISC, other doctoral students and postdocs in the team, and with junior and senior researchers in the department and faculty including the Cluster of Excellence “Climate, Climatic Change, and Society”. This includes attending research seminars at the department. Funding is provided for conference travel and summer schools as well as submissions for publication.
Your profile
A university degree in a relevant field.
You hold a master degree in economics or another social science with a strong quantitative background and have the necessary education and motivation to design survey-based experiments and to empirically analyze experimental data with STATA and/or R. Ideally you have some experience with conducting empirical or experimental research (e.g. as part of your master thesis). You have a professional command of the English language, work well in teams and have an interest in interactions with other social scientists.
