Use of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) in examinations during studies and final theses

The Universität Hamburg Orientation Framework for Using Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) System in Studies and Teaching contains general didactic principles for the use of GAI and outlines options for integration in teaching and examinations:

The University of Hamburg has published an AI guide for students. Clear infographics, helpful examples, and concise checklists provide an overview and explain how to use AI wisely and responsibly. In the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences, a working group for digital teaching and examinations has further specified the defined framework through teaching, learning and examination recommendations for the use of GAI.
Please note that of the recommendations listed in the file, only 'Option A' should be used for both course-related examinations and final theses in accordance with the program directors of the degree programs of the Department of Socioeconomics:

On the use of GAI in final theses

For final theses, GAI tools may only be used to an extent that has been agreed in advance with the examiners. As a general rule, GAI may only be used as an aid, if at all. The creative contribution of the students must predominate.

In addition to the agreements on the use of GAI, the rules of good scientific practice continue to apply, such as the correct handling of data, sources and material and the correct treatment of the intellectual property of others.

Agreement on the use of GAI with registration of the final thesis

Before work on the final thesis begins, students and examiners must agree on the use of GAI. To ensure that students are informed of this necessary agreement in good time, a note on this is included in the PDF form for registering the final thesis.

Documentation of the use of GAI via the declaration of authorship for final theses

Together with the thesis, students must submit a declaration of authorship for final theses in which they document, among other things, the use of GAI:

On the use of GAI in course-related examinations (e.g. term papers)

For course-related examinations (term papers, written final project reports, take-home exams, etc.), clear regulations on the use of GAI are recommended. However, an examination must always be an independent achievement.

Announcement of the regulations on the use of GAI in the courses

Lecturers/examiners should address the use of GAI in their courses and present the regulations they have defined for coursework and examinations. As authorized examiners, lecturers determine the scope and, if applicable, the areas in which GAI may be used for the preparation of coursework and examinations. They can generally prohibit the use of GAI or allow its use to a defined extent.

Documentation of the use of GAI via the declaration of authorship for examinations during your studies

If students are permitted by their lecturers/examiners to use GAI in the context of course-related examinations, it is recommended that they use the declaration of authorship for examinations during your studies, which can be submitted by the students together with the examination work and in which they confirm/document compliance with the regulations on the use of GAI of the lecturers/examiners:
