Faculty

Anke Gerber has been Professor of Microeconomic Theory and Experiments at Universität Hamburg since 2007. Her research covers a wide range of topics in public economics, social choice and decision theory and has been published in leading academic journals including Theoretical Economics, the Journal of Public Economics and the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis. She is member of the Council of the Society for Social Choice and Welfare and member of the Executive Council of the German Economic Association.

Matthew Braham has been Professor of Practical Philosophy at Universität Hamburg since 2017. His research is in all three PEP disciplines, focusing on power, freedom, causation, responsibility, Kant, libertarianism, and voting rules. Braham's research is characterized by the application of formal methods of game theory and social choice. His work is published in leading journals: Mind, The Journal of Philosophy, Erkenntnis, Economics & Philosophy, The Economic Journal, International Journal of Law & Economics, Social Choice & Welfare, Journal of Theoretical Politics.

Thomas Kroedel has been Professor of Philosophy of Science at Universität Hamburg since 2017. He holds a B.Phil. and a D.Phil. degree from the University of Oxford. His areas of specialization are philosophy of science, epistemology, philosophy of mind and metaphysics. He has published articles in leading journals such as Analysis, Noûs and The British Journal for the Philosophy of Science and a monograph on mental causation with Cambridge University Press.

Andreas Lange joined Universität Hamburg as Professor of Economics in 2010. He still is Adjunct Faculty Member at University of Maryland, AREC, as well as Research Associate at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) Mannheim. He serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management. His research includes theoretical, experimental and applied work on issues in public, environmental, and behavioral economics. He is member of the coordinating team at the Cluster for Excellence on Climate, Climatic Change, and Society (CliCCS).

Lydia Mechtenberg has a PhD in philosophy and another PhD in economics. She is Professor of Microeconomics at Universität Hamburg and uses theory and experiments to investigate economic and political behavior. Her research is published in leading international journals such as Review of Economic Studies, Management Science, and Games and Economic Behavior. She is work-package leader in the EU-Consortium DEMOS (2018-2021) and member of the Standing Committees of Economic Theory, Public Finance, and Organizational Economics of the German Economic Association.

Gerd Muehlheusser has been Professor of Microeconomics at Universität Hamburg since 2011. His research interests are in the broad field of applied microeconomics, in particular law & economics, industrial organization, personnel and organizational economics, and behavioral economics. His work was published in journals such as RAND Journal of Economics, European Economic Review, Journal of Law, Economics & Organization, Economics Letters, and The Journal of Legal Studies. His is currently also the Managing Editor of the Journal of Institutional and Theoretical Economics (JITE).

Peter Niesen has been Professor of Political Theory at Universität Hamburg since 2013. Niesen has worked on Kant, Bentham, and Habermas and currently directs a DFG funded project on constituent power beyond the state. His work has been published in Constellations, Journal of International Political Theory and the Journal of Common Market Studies. Niesen is a former founding member of the Cluster of Excellence „Formation of Normative Orders“. Since 2017, he has been speaker of the German Association for Political Theory.

Elvira Rosert has been Junior Professor for International Relations at Universität Hamburg and at the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy since 2017. Her research is concerned with the emergence, robustness, and interactions of international institutions. She is currently conducting a research project at the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, funded by the German Research Foundation. Among others, her articles have been published in the European Journal of International Relations, and the Review of International Studies.

Kai-Uwe Schnapp has been Professor of Political Science, especially Research Methodology at Universität Hamburg since 2008. His research covers a wide range of issues from methodological topics to questions of needs based justice on to comparative research in parliaments and public administration. He published his research in various journals, edited volumes and monographies. He is member of the editorial board of the Politische Vierteljahresschrift (German Political Science Review).

Judith Simon is Professor for Ethics in Information Technologies at Universität Hamburg. Holding a MA in psychology from the Free University of Berlin and a PhD in philosophy from the University of Vienna, her current research focuses on epistemological, ethical and political questions related to data analytics, artificial intelligence and digitalization in general. She is a member of the German Ethics Council as well as various committees of the DFG, BMBF and the Leopoldina.

Christine Straehle is professor for practical philosophy. Her research focuses on the ethics of migration, questions of global justice and conceptions of vulnerability and autonomy in moral philosophy. She is editor or co-editor of several volumes, most recently The Political Philosophy of Refuge (Cambridge University Press, 2019) and is editor for the interdisciplinary journal Global Justice. Before coming to Hamburg,  Straehle was Inaugural Director of the Centre for Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the University of Groningen, in the Netherlands where she also held the Chair in Philosophy and Public Affairs and Professor for Ethics at the University of Ottawa. 

Vera Troeger is Professor of Comparative Political Science at Universität Hamburg. Currently she serves as president of the European Political Science Association. She is the founding editor-in-chief of the flagship journal of the EPSA – Political Science Research and Methods, and she will take over as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Politics, one of the top 3 journals in Political Science, in 2020. Her research interests lie at the intersection between international and comparative political economy, labour economics, as well as applied quantitative data analysis and political methodology.

Stefan Voigt is professor at the Institute of Law & Economics of Universität Hamburg. His research focuses on the economic effects of constitutions. More specifically, current research focuses on the economic effects of judicial institutions. Voigt is one of the editors of Constitutional Political Economy and a member of various boards including those of Public Choice and the International Review of Law & Economics. Voigt has consulting experience with both the public and the private sector.
