As one of only 10 universities in Germany the University of Hamburg has recently been awarded the status of a University of Excellence by the German Council of Science and Humanities. The graduate program is keyed to several collaborative research projects with participation of researchers in the graduate program.

The Excellence Cluster “Climate, Climatic Change, and Society (CliCCS)” belongs to the university's core research area “Climate, Earth and Environment”. It is concerned with the analysis of societal, political, cultural and economic dynamics of climate change, which is a natural application of collective decision-making.

The research unit "Big Structural Change” investigates institutional changes, focusing on those changes that are "big" and can potentially unsettle the societal structure, i.e. the web of rules such as laws and social norms that a society uses to solve its social, political, and economic conflicts of interest, and to organize itself.
