Portrait

Dr Matthias Revers substitutes the chair of "Communication Science, Climate and Science Communication" since April 2023. He is Associate Professor of  Political Communication at the University of Leeds (currently on leave). He is also a Faculty Fellow at the Center for Cultural Sociology at Yale University.

His current research interests are in the area of political polarization in/through communication, including the moral limits of free speech (especially in higher education), the conditions of conversational depolarization, and the relationship between the public (performative polarization) and interpersonal (micropolarization) drama of political antagonism. His work also includes studies of comparative media and journalism (U.S.-Germany) and digital transformation in journalism. Methodologically, Revers works ethnographically, with qualitative interviews, surveys, discourse analysis, and computer-assisted methods (especially topic modeling).
