The University of Hamburg is relaunching its master’s program in Journalism and Communication Studies. Starting in October this year, the program will be offered under the new name “Communication and Journalism Research for a Sustainable Society”. The master’s has an international focus and will be taught entirely in English.
“The revamped master’s program addresses two of the most pressing challenges facing our society today: sustainability and digitalization,” explains Professor Michael Brüggemann, Program Director of the Department Journalism and Communication Studies.
The program focuses on the communicative challenge of the so-called “twin transformation” – the question of how digital and ecological change can be shaped in a democratic and socially responsible way. Students engage with the transformation of digital media, new ethical and quality standards in journalism, and the role of communication in ecological, political, and social transformation processes.
The master’s program aims not only to help students understand current changes in the media landscape and society, but also to actively contribute in shaping them. “Research cannot stop at describing and explaining why, for example, the media report so little on climate change,” Professor Brüggemann emphasizes. What matters, he says, is how change can be achieved in practice. The program is designed to support students in engaging critically with and addressing this central question.
The restructured master’s program builds on a long-standing research focus of the Department of Journalism and Communication Studies in digital communication as well as climate and sustainability communication. Its international orientation broadens perspectives beyond local and national borders, preparing students for careers in journalism, media organizations, NGOs, and the public sector.
