Insecurity can impose distinctive burdens on individuals: making us anxious, impairing our relationships, and limiting our ability to plan our lives. On the other hand, risky situations are sometimes exciting, liberating, and even empowering. The lecture will explore these two contrasting visions of the place of risk in human experience. I will discuss a recent collaborative project that employed large-scale survey data to investigate the relationship between economic risk and individual self-respect. I will then draw out some broader lessons from this study: both for the ethics of risk and for the question of the role of public opinion in normative political theory.
