Library card

If you wish to

borrow books from the special collection or textbook collection,
reserve media that is checked out,
request books or journals via the Katalogplus or from the German National Library of Economics (ZBW), or
use the online services of Universität Hamburg's library system,

you need a valid library card. Please apply online.
The card entitles you to use all of the libraries of Universität Hamburg's library system in accordance with the valid Regulations for Use.

In accordance with the Hamburg Higher Education Act, a library card is free of charge for all students of national universities on the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany as well as for scientific staff of the universities of Hamburg, the University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg and the Evangelische Hochschule für Soziale Arbeit & Diakonie. A library card is also free of charge for pupils of schools of general education.

Where and when can I pick up my library card?

After you have submitted the online application, you may pick up your card at the respective WiSo libraries.

Please take note of our service hours:

Monday–Friday: 9 am–5 pm

You may also pick up your library card at the service desk at the State and University Library (Stabi).

What do I need to pick up my library card?

As students of national universities on the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany, you will need:

your identification card (or passport with registration certificate) and
your current student ID card or employment contract.

As scientific staff of the universities of Hamburg, the University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg and the Evangelische Hochschule für Soziale Arbeit & Diakonie, you will need:

your identification card (or passport with registration certificate) and
your current employment contract.

If you do not belong to one of these groups, please ask the staff at the circulation desk for further information.

How does my library account work?

You have access to your library account via the Katalogplus.
Your library account contains information about your activities at the Library WISO/BWL and at all other libraries in the Universität Hamburg library system.

Authentication is provided by way of your library card number and password. The default password is the first three letters of your last name.
Please choose a personal password after you receive your library card.
Your personal password should not contain any punctuation marks, special characters, or capitalization and should be no longer than 10 characters.
