Grischa Perino and Thomas Pioch have published a paper in the journal Climate Policy on the impact of the EU-wide ban on incandescent light bulbs on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. They explicitly consider the role of the EU Emission Trading System (EU ETS) which caps emissions in several industries, including the power sector. Hence, saving electricity does not imply a direct reduction in GHG emissions. However, due to the considerably longer lifespan of more energy efficient lighting sources, the ban reduces GHG emissions - though much less so than projected by the European Commission.
At the time of writing the paper, Thomas Pioch was a student in the Bachelor program "Sozioalökonomie".
