Philosophy of Preferences

The concept of preferences is fundamental to the social sciences, especially economics and decision theory. Here preferences play both a descriptive and normative role. Preferences are key to explanation and to evaluation of individual and collective action. The purpose of this course is to examine and discuss the concept of preference, the relationship of preference and choice, the measurement of preference, and how preferences relate to notions of individual wellbeing and social welfare.
