The Science Platform for Climate Protection (Wissenschaftsplattform Klimaschutz) hosts an Workshop on "Why participation and involvement are becoming indispensable for the energy transition under increasing pressure to act" on 16th September 2022.
Ambitious climate protection targets and a reassessment of geopolitical dependencies on fossil fuels are currently leading to increased pressure to accelerate the expansion of infrastructure for renewable energies. This is currently pushing the relevance of participation and involvement into the background, even though they enable the implementation of far-reaching climate protection measures in the first place. The workshop will therefore address the possibilities of participation at the municipal level as a means of building acceptance and active ownership.
The aim of the event is
- to present the empirical evidence on the effects and prerequisites of successful participation,
- to facilitate an exchange of experiences on how to deal with the increasing pressure to act in the municipalities, and
- to identify the needs and wishes of the municipalities.
The results of the half-day exchange will be bundled in an input paper that will be forwarded to the responsible ministries as a requirements analysis.

Science Platform for Climate Protection (WPKS)
Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze and Federal Research Minister Anja Karliczek gave the go-ahead for the Science Platform for Climate Protection (Wissenschaftsplatform Klimaschutz / WPKS) on June 7, 2019. The platform supports the German government in the implementation and further development of the German long-term climate protection strategy with scientific expertise. In addition to the Climate Protection Program 2030, the Climate Protection Plan 2050, which describes the accompanying scientific process, is a central component of this strategy. The Federal Climate Protection Act also addresses the role of the Science Platform for Climate Protection.
The Science Platform for Climate Protection is steered by a steering committee and supported by a full-time office in Berlin. CSS Members Anita Engels and Timo Busch have been appointed as members of the steering committee.
