CSS director Prof. Stefan Aykut believes that too much is expected of the COPs. In an interview with French newspaper Le Monde, he shares his view that the debate on the questioning of our economic model must be launched at national level.
Stefan Aykut argues that a climate conference is just one among many arenas in which climate policy and global climate policy options are negotiated. Therefore, the high expectations placed on COPs are in some ways misguided. COPs should not be seen as places where surprising and new solutions can emerge, but rather as places where things that are being facilitated at other - i.e., national - levels can be taken up and formalized.
