ARIADNE - Evidenzbasiertes Assessment für die Gestaltung der deutschen Energiewende (evidence-based assessment for the design of the German energy transition)
- Funding provided by: Federal Ministry of Education and Research / Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung
- Co-ordinating principal investigator: Dr. Ottmar Edenhofer, Potsdam-Institut für Klimafolgenforschung [PIK]
- Duration: June 2020 – May 2023
- Contribution by the Chair of Environmental Economics: In the context of the European integration of the German energy transition we will focus on the role of regulatory uncertainty, e.g. induced by the current design of the market stability reserve within the EU Emission Trading System (ETS) and by future revisions of the rules governing the EU ETS. To better understand the latter we will also theoretically and empirically investigate the political economic drivers of revisions of the EU ETS.

Norddeutsche Energiewende (NEW) 4.0
- Funding provided by: Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy / Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Energie
- Co-ordinating principal investigator: Prof. Dr. Werner Beba, Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften Hamburg [HAW]
- Duration: December 2016 – March 2021
- Contribution by the Chair of Environmental Economics: Jointly with the team of Dr. Andreas Lange we assess the current regulatory framework of the electricity market with a focus on its ability to induce a further diffusion and integration of renewable energy and sector coupling. We provide recommendations for adjustments of this framework. We conduct empirical research on the emission impact of renewables, their role in risk premia in the day-ahead market and strategic considerations in the context of congestion in transmission networks.
