The I-JAI project welcomes Anne Schmitz as a new postdoctoral researcher
1 June 2026
Anne Schmitz joins the project Isomorphism through AI? Exploring Journalistic AI via Industry Awards (I-JAI).
Dr. Anne Schmitz started as a postdoctoral researcher in the DFG-funded research project Isomorphism through AI? Exploring Journalistic AI via Industry Awards (I-JAI) on June 1, 2026, at the Department of Journalism and Communication Studies.
She completed her PhD at the Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research (ZeMKI) at the University of Bremen. In her dissertation, she examined the development processes of digital technologies in journalism and analyzed how technological innovations emerge and are negotiated among different actors within journalistic organizations. Prior to joining the University of Hamburg, she worked in a DFG-funded research project on technology-oriented pioneer communities.
Within the I-JAI project, she collaborates with Prof. Dr. Juliane A. Lischka to investigate the role of international industry awards in the development and diffusion of AI innovations in journalism. The project explores which forms of AI use in newsrooms are recognized through awards, which actors and objectives shape these projects, and which understandings of innovation are promoted through these processes.
Drawing on her expertise in technological innovation and organizational processes in journalism, Anne Schmitz will contribute new perspectives to the study of AI innovations and their institutional conditions within the project.
We are delighted to welcome Anne to the team and look forward to working with her!
