18 September 2024
The German Research Foundation (DFG) has approved a three-year research project on artificial intelligence (AI) in journalism, which will be carried out in cooperation between journalism researchers Prof. Dr Juliane Lischka at the University of Hamburg, Jun. Prof. Dr Jessica Kunert at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and Prof. Dr Nancy Booker at Aga Khan University in Nairobi, Kenya.
One of the central aims of the project entitled ‘AI in Journalism: Exploring AI Circles in Journalism’ (J-AIC for short) is to develop a comprehensive understanding of the impact of AI on the news media landscape in Germany and Kenya. A particular focus is on the investigation of macroeconomic factors and regulatory frameworks for the formation of inter-organisational networks, the AI circles, which influence the introduction of AI in journalism. Another focus is to analyse key actors within these AI circles, their communication and their level of knowledge about AI in order to understand how responsible AI adoption is progressing in the respective countries. The findings of the J-AIC project will be disseminated through scientific and transfer-oriented publications, conferences, and workshops both locally and internationally in order to promote knowledge exchange and stimulate a broad discussion.
