Health in ageing societies: current challenges and solutions for the future in the long-term care sector

Population aging greatly increased the share of elderly individuals in the population and the number
of people needing long-term care. In the United States, the share of population aged 85 and older is
predicted to double by 2050. In Germany the share of the population at retirement age has already
increased by one third over the last two decades, from 15% in 1995 to 21% in 2015, and it is expected
to increase further to 28% by 2035.

What are the challenges ahead? What is the effect of labour and capacity shortages? What policy
solutions are there, and what can we learn from other countries?
