“Exploring the experience-expectation nexus in macroeconomic forecasting using computational text analysis and machine learning (DFG)"

- SALARY LEVEL 13 TV-L -

The position in accordance with Section 28 subsection 3 of the Hamburg higher education act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG) commences on June 01, 2019.

This is a fixed-term contract in accordance with Section 2 of the academic fixed-term labor contract act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG). The term is fixed for a period of 3 years. The position calls for 75% of standard work hours per week**.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

Based on a large database of business cycle forecasts the team will use methods from corpus linguistics (sentiment analysis, topic models, structural topic models, classification tools) to investigate the experience-expectation nexus and the role of ideology for the production of macroeconomic forecasts.

The project supports the promotion of doctoral candidates and early career researchers under the main supervision of the principal investigator Prof. Dr. Fritsche.

Specific duties include…

• the collection and pre-processing of qualitative and quantitative data,
• the investigation of research hypothesis using text-mining and advanced statistical tools
• as well as the joint production and presentation of scientific papers at international conferences.

 REQUIREMENTS:

• A university degree in a relevant field
• Preferably the university degree (minimum master level) is in economics, statistics, computer sciences or applied mathematics
• A strong interest in statistical learning tools/ econometrics and/ or computer linguistics is necessary
• Programming skills in e.g. R, Python or Julia are of great advantage
