During the semester
Material allocation, communication, and digitalization of teaching
To send students STiNE messages or upload teaching and learning materials on the server, select the relevant event under “Veranstaltungen” and carry out the desired action. To send messages, select the menu option “Teilnehmer > Neue Nachricht.” If you want to send messages, you must select the recipients in the window displayed below and compose the message as you would an email. Send the message using the “Senden” function. If you close the window or use the “Schließen” function without sending the message first, it will be discarded.
To provide students with teaching and learning materials, you can use the “Neu” function under “Material” in the menu. On the following screen, you must fill in the description fields and then select “Datei hochladen.” In the window that opens, search for the file you want to make available; once you selected the file, click on “Upload starten.” Wait until the message “Upload erfolgreich” is displayed in the window. To publish the material, click on “Speichern” in the main window. If you do not select this option, the material will not be published but rather deleted from the server.

Attendance
With the exception of lectures, attendance is compulsory for all courses in accordance with Section 5 of the subject-specific provisions (FSB). However, lecturers are free to release students from the attendance requirement or to waive attendance checks.
To fulfill the attendance requirement, students cannot miss more than 15 percent of the course. If students miss more than 15 percent of a course due to reasons beyond their control (e.g., illness), their participation in the final module examination can be made dependent on the fulfillment of the condition that additional coursework is completed to document that the missed course material has been made up (Section 9 subsection 2 of the examination regulations). A doctor’s note or other certificates showing that the student is not responsible for the missed hours must be submitted to the lecturer.
academic achievements
In the bachelor’s and master’s degree programs, a distinction is made between graded examinations and ungraded coursework (Section 13 examination regulations). Examination grades are used to calculate the module grade. Coursework is small, ungraded assignments that must be completed during the course. The successful completion of coursework is a prerequisite for eligibility to take the module examination. Possible coursework is minutes of lectures, preparation of annotated bibliographies, short presentations, essays, excerpts, reviews, or similar (for a list, see Section 13 subsection 1 of the subject-specific provisions).
Example: The completion of a presentation (coursework) is a prerequisite for participation in the term paper (module examination).
Important: Particularity in the BA intermediate module Political science and various MA modules Political Science
In these modules, which consist of 2 courses each, students can choose in which seminar they would like to do the module examination. This means that students complete coursework in both seminars and also take an examination in one of the seminars. The grades for the coursework and the examinations must be entered into STiNE in separate lists.
The examination requirements (examination and coursework types, scope, and dates) for a course must be announced before the start of the course registration period. Regular participation in a course may also be considered completed coursework.
Performance requirements in the free elective area
Students from other departments and faculties can also attend courses in the Department of Social Sciences in the so-called free elective area (or in the Studium Generale, as an elective component, or as an extracurricular course). In principle, the regulations of the department offering the course apply to the coursework and examinations, as stipulated in the respective subject-specific provisions and announced in the course description in STiNE.
This means that the performance requirements generally apply equally to all participating students, including elective-area students. The only exception is a course that is open to a module of another degree program that requires a different performance and for which there is a corresponding examination list.
Therefore, students are not permitted to receive an elective-area certificate for fewer or more credit points in a seminar worth 6 ECTS credits -LP seminar or to have their coursework assessed differently (pass/fail instead of graded).
Be aware that in the intermediate modules in the Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and the seminars in the Master of Arts in Political Science, students in the elective area only have to complete the coursework. Elective-area students cannot take an examination that is also possible for students majoring in the subject.
Room requests during the lecture period
If you would like to book a seminar room for a single appointment or one of the departmental rooms (250, 409, 419) when the building at Allendeplatz 1 is accessible again (e.g., for meetings with working groups, public events), submit a room request via your STiNE account (“Lehre > Raumanfrage").
Teaching evaluations
Lecturers can have their course evaluated by the participating students in the sixth or seventh week of lectures through a short interim evaluation and/or from the ninth week of lectures through a final evaluation in the form of a standardized online survey. The survey can be conducted in German or English. Participation in the course evaluation is voluntary for lecturers and students. The results (a machine-generated PDF report) are emailed to the respective lecturers, and only them. We encourage lecturers to discuss the results with the students during the course.
An invitation to use the online evaluation will be sent to all lecturers and adjunct lecturers of the relevant semester via the email address they have provided in STiNE and via a faculty mailing list. No registration is required.
Projectors, computers, VGA cables
All seminar rooms at Allendeplatz 1—except 101 and 102 (note: Allendeplatz 1 is currently closed)—as well as the seminar rooms at Von-Melle-Park 5 (economics building) and Von-Melle-Park 9 are equipped with projectors and connections for notebooks. It is no longer possible to borrow notebooks from the IT department in the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences.
Before the first class in their course, we recommend that lecturers check out the technical equipment in the seminar rooms and whether everything is working and inform themselves about borrowing connector cables (HDMI, VGA, etc.) at the reception desk responsible.
The functionality of the media technology in the lecture halls, seminar rooms, and meeting rooms should be guaranteed through regular checks. However, should you encounter application issues or disruptions, contact the following locations:
