On-Demand Mobility

Nahverkehrsverbund Schleswig-Holstein GmbH has been conducting a pilot project on on-demand mobility in rural areas on behalf of the state of Schleswig-Holstein in cooperation with the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde in the Rendsburg region since August 2021. The "remo" service is a flexible on-demand public transport (so-called line-demand transport), which can be booked on weekends, in the evening and after-hours via app along a virtual stop network within the regular Schleswig-Holstein tariff system. A pooling algorithm is used to combine journeys with similar routes, thus maximizing the utilization of the vehicles as much as possible.
The Universität Hamburg will scientifically accompany remo with a mobility sociological perspective for two years. Quantitative and qualitative approaches will be used to determine which groups of people use the service for which activities, what their main motivators are, and at what points there are any frictions. At the same time, non-users will be asked about the factors that prevent them from using on-demand transport or make it seem unattractive to them, and thus to identify unused potential. Further knowledge interests lie in the identification of possible effects - both positive and negative - on local businesses and cultural institutions.
The overarching goal is to identify opportunities and limitations of using alternative forms of transportation - and here especially on-demand services: How can not only remo, but similar services do even better? Furthermore, it is of interest to what extent the expansion of digitally controlled local transport services can contribute to the transport turnaround in rural areas by replacing car trips (and perhaps even cars in the medium term) with public transport and ridepooling.
