We are proud to announce the successful MSc thesis presentation of our team member Ella Karnik Hinks
Her thesis "Listen to the science!' A narrative analysis of Extinction Rebellion in the United Kingdom" was supervised by Prof. Dr. Simone Rödder (Universität Hamburg) and Prof. Dr. Stefan Aykut (Universität Hamburg).
Ella investigated the relation that the climate movement Extinction Rebellion have with "science", and how this impacts their construction of climate futures. She did this by conducting a narrative analysis of the group's press releases, combined with fieldwork performed during the COP26 in Glasgow. Alongside a team of researchers from the University of Hamburg, Ella conducted participant observation and semi-structured interviews with protesters at the climate conference. She was able to identify three distinct roles of science narrated by the movement. She argues that utilising scientists as a technocratic authority that affirms apocalyptic visions acts to depoliticise the discourse and inhibits radical imaginaries.
Ella’s future plans?
After finishing her thesis, Ella intends to catch up on her reading and knitting, and will continue to work at CLICCS supporting a project in the B2 group (Dynamics of Climate Governance: Norms, Contestation, and Policies).
