Development of an E-Learning Platform to Promote Maternal Health in Resource-Limited Areas
Maternal and child health is a pressing social challenge in Ethiopia, characterized by alarmingly high maternal and neonatal mortality rates.
In 2019, 30 deaths per 1,000 live births were estimated for neonatal mortality and 412 deaths per 100,000 live births for maternal mortality. An essential prerequisite for the health of mothers and newborns is the availability of qualified healthcare services. However, the shortage of specialists, particularly in rural areas, is a significant obstacle to timely and adequate care. This shortage contributes to the unacceptably high mortality rate in Ethiopia and highlights the urgent need for targeted interventions to address inequalities in the health sector.
Educational resources for training expectant mothers are often limited or outdated, which is particularly problematic in rural regions. There is often a lack of up-to-date medical knowledge and information, which can jeopardize the quality of care and health outcomes. It is critical to close this gap in order to provide timely and accurate health education and services to rural populations. For this reason, our project is concerned with the development of an e-learning platform adapted to the context. Particular attention is being paid to the resources available locally.
In cooperation with Prof. Dr. Rahel Bekele from Addis Ababa University, we are developing a co-creative seminar series.
