Anna Fünfgeld is a postdoctoral researcher and member of the Cluster of Excellence 'Climate, Climatic Change and Society' (CLICCS) at the University of Hamburg, Germany. She is also an Associate Fellow at the Institute for Latin American Studies (ILAS) and the Institute for Asian Studies (IAS) of the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA). At the University of Hamburg, Anna co-authors the annual 'Climate Transformation Outlook for Germany'.
Anna's research focuses on energy and climate politics, infrastructure studies, natural resource conflicts, social movements, and the far right. Her regional focus is on Indonesia/Southeast Asia, Brazil/Latin America, and Germany. Anna is particularly interested in assessing potentials and obstacles for socio-ecological transformation, climate obstruction, and climate and energy justice from a critical political economy/Gramscian, STS, and Critical Theory perspective.
Anna holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Freiburg and the GIGA. Her academic background is in political science/international relations, geography, social and cultural anthropology, and German literature and language. Previously, Anna worked at the University of Potsdam as a principal researcher on the DFG-funded INLOCADE project, which focuses on the institutionalization of low-carbon development in Brazil, India, Indonesia, and South Africa. At the University of Freiburg, Anna previously worked as a methodology coordinator and researcher for the BMBF-funded Freiburg Southeast Asian Studies Project. She has also been a researcher and lecturer at the University of Freiburg's Department of International Politics and the Institute of Human Geography, a lecturer at the University of Freiburg's Chair of Science and Technology Studies, and a researcher at the Evangelical University of Applied Sciences Freiburg.
In addition to her academic work, Anna has conducted and contributed to several policy consulting studies (for the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, and GIZ), worked as a freelance radio journalist, and is a trainer on anti-discrimination (anti-right-wing extremism/populism, argumentation training, anti-bias, and Betzavta).
