The term "impact investments" is increasingly used to describe investments in the sustainability context. In many cases, impact investments are seen as a new framing for what has already been happening. In their article, the authors aim to offer a (re)orientation from an academic perspective and derive a new typology of sustainable investments. One central contribution is their proposal to differentiate between impact-aligned investments and impact-generating investments. While impact-aligned investments apply a comprehensive set of exclusion criteria and combine at least one pre- and one post-investment decision approach, impact-generating investments may use different strategies.
This article is especially relevant for investors and beneficiaries to gain a better understanding of what to expect from each type of investment. The remaining challenge identified by the authors is the development of a standardized framework for determining and measuring real-world impacts.
