Title: Transformative disobedience: from civil disobedience to direct action

Abstract:

Are all acts of political violation of the law instances of civil disobedience? Given civil disobedience’s glorious history, many seek to use the idea of civil disobedience to justify actions that should be understood in a different manner. I argue that the distinction between communicative and non-communicative forms of disobedience can help us distinguish different forms of disobedience and assess them in their own terms.
