Requirements for the doctorate at the chair
- In principle, preference is given to students of the University of Hamburg
- Prerequisite for the application is a passed state examination with the grade "vollbefriedigend" or a completed master's degree with the grade "very good".
- If the above grades are not achieved, exceptions may be possible if the student has previously attended a seminar given by the chair with a good or very good grade

Application
- Applications are to be made by submitting complete application documents to the chair holder
- Application materials should include the following:
- a curriculum vitae in tabular form,
- a letter of motivation and
- one or more proposals for the doctoral thesis topic
- External applications must include a synopsis describing a detailed proposal of the topic; this may also apply to Hamburg students following an initial interview
- Proposals for the dissertation topic should demonstrate that the applicant is already familiar with the state of scientific research in the field and that there is a need for further research justifying the work
Content orientation of the topic
- The proposed topic should be oriented towards the main focus of the chair, which includes civil law, German and European commercial, corporate and business law, in particular also banking, stock exchange and capital market law, insurance law, insolvency and reorganization law, real estate, leasing and tenancy law, energy law, in particular renewable energies, economic constitutional law, civil procedural law together with attorney and notary liability law as well as methodology and sociology of law
- As a general rule, the purpose of a doctorate is a monographic development of a scientific thesis and not a collection of different aspects on a topic
- The thesis to be developed should have a practical reference and in particular deal with questions that arise in current legal practice
