Welcome!I am Junior Professor for International Relations at the Universität Hamburg and at the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy (IFSH). My work is motivated by the belief that the purpose of science is to foster social progress, and to be able to do so requires a better understanding of the world we live in. That's why in the broad field of International Relations, I am interested in questions of peace and progress, with international norms - that I view as a promise of a better world - as my main research focus. I share most of the assumptions of the current scholarship on this phenomenon while trying to contribute insights on aspects that have been neglected so far such as the erosion of international norms, their unintended effects (e.g. permissive effects) and their non-emergence. Empirically, I work in the field of international humanitarian law, arms control and disarmament. I focus on prohibitions of weapons deemed particularly inhumane. Additionally to the topics already mentioned, I teach on IR theory, research designs and methods, global politics, international organizations, United Nations, and Global Governance.
