We are looking for a PhD student (75% TV-L, 4 years) starting April 2026 who’s excited about working together with communities to explore how we can reimagine security as liberalism is eroding.

My project „Security Utopias in Catastrophic Times” examines how communities who were never fully included in the liberal nation-state's promise of security are creating transformative forms of protection when liberal institutions fail them. Using participatory methods, we'll explore with them how they are building alternative security frameworks and prefiguring more inclusive futures.

The project is part of PROMISE – “The Promise of Security in Catastrophic Times” – a new DFG-funded Research Group in Hamburg. You’ll be embedded in an inspiring interdisciplinary team with brilliant colleagues from political science, sociology, international relations, communication studies, and human geography. PROMISE is hiring 5 PhD students and 3 postdocs across exciting security research projects.
