Information for program directors and module coordinators
Prerequisites for teaching contracts
Teaching contracts are offered only if a course prescribed by academic regulations cannot be taught by full-time teaching staff within the scope of their teaching obligations. As a rule, teaching contracts are offered on a semester basis.
The legal conditions for offering teaching contracts are provided in the
Necessary qualifications
Adjunct lecturers for bachelor’s programs must have a least a master’s degree or equivalent university degree. They must provide proof of their degree at the latest when they start their contractual employment.
Adjunct lecturers for master’s programs must have completed a doctorate; if they have not but are still expected to teach for a master’s program, a reason must be provided informally per mail to the office of the dean via the front office, where a final decision will be made.
Scope of teaching contracts
Adjunct lecturers should teach a maximum of 4 course hours per week per semester.
Teaching contracts amounting to more than a total of 4 course hours per week (representing 56 teaching hours per semester) for any individual person require the submission of an exemption request before the contract is given. This rule applies to teaching contracts for the entire University (meaning, if applicable, other subject areas, departments, and even other faculties should be taken into consideration).

Remuneration
All teaching contracts are remunerated in accordance with the administrative order on the remuneration of lecturers and on the reimbursement of travel expenses for lecturers and visiting scholars at Hamburg universities (Verwaltungsordnung über die Vergütung der Lehrbeauftragten sowie über die Erstattung der Reisekosten für Lehrbeauftragte und Gastwissenschaftlerinnen und Gastwissenschaftler an den hamburgischen Hochschulen).
Currently, remuneration at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Science is €60 per credit hour, meaning €1,680 for a course covering 2 credit hours per week (€3,360 for courses covering 4 credit hours per week) for an entire semester.

Incorporating the course into the curriculum
Document major details (title, preferred dates/times) for your planned course(s) using a web form:
The staff responsible in the Social Sciences Academic Office will clarify all organizational details for your planned course(s) with you.
Concluding a contract
You will receive initial administrative information about your teaching contract from the teaching contracts team in the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences. You will be asked to submit information (using a Sharepoint form) and documents so that we can issue a contract. At the same time, a uni username and a University email account will be set up for you.
If you have questions about concluding the contract, contact the teaching contracts team of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences by mail.
Additional gainful work?
Adjunct lecturers who are employed in public service (especially with Universität Hamburg) at the same time must provide notice thereof. The notice should be submitted through the supervisor to the department’s front office, for approval by University HR. The teaching contract can be offered only upon approval from HR.

Be sure to get written approval (a Nebentätigkeitsbescheinigung) well before the deadline!
Remuneration
Remuneration is governed by the agreement on teaching contract remuneration as amended. Currently, remuneration is €1,680 for courses of 2 credit hours per week (€3,360 for courses with 4 credit hours per week). Remuneration might be higher in exceptional cases (and must be authorized by the departmental spokesperson, or faculty/administrative manager).
As a rule, travel expenses are not reimbursed for teaching contracts. Exceptions must be clarified before the teaching contract is issued.
As a rule, “Titellehre” (Section 17 on professor and Privatdozent positions) is not remunerated.
Remuneration is paid promptly after documentation proving the course took place is submitted (you will receive the necessary documents at the end of the lecture period). Sign these documents without delay to receive payment.
Income from teaching contracts is taxable (there is a tax allowance), which is why you need to provide your tax office and tax number to receive the teaching contract.
You can also waive remuneration (unpaid teaching contracts). Remuneration cannot be made to other people or institutions (no invoicing).
STiNE access, University email
uni username
For STiNE, Wi-Fi, and other technical systems, you will need a uni username (also known as a B-Kennung, formatted as Bxx1234). If you do not have this, the teaching contracts team will apply for one for you when creating the teaching contract. You will then receive a letter from the Regional Computing Center with information about your uni username.
STiNE access for adjunct lecturers
The STiNE uni username for adjunct lecturers is generated automatically when the teaching contract is being created. This is initiated by the teaching contracts team. STiNE access is granted for 2 semesters and ends on the last day of the semester in which you teach.
When you receive your uni username, you also gain access to your University email address. Use this address only for internal communication, meaning with your students and the course management team. Check your account regularly. The email address is granted for 2 semesters and ends on the last day of the semester in which you teach.
Funds to support teaching
The Department of Social Sciences supports creative, innovative teaching, especially by funding excursions and guest lecturers. If you would like to invite guests to your courses or offer an excursion, you can apply for financial support. Please observe the request deadlines and standard funding amounts.
Course evaluation
You can have your students evaluate your course(s). The results of the online evaluation are sent only to the teacher in question; other people or offices are not informed.
You do not have to sign up individually for the interim or final evaluation. The passwords to participate in the course evaluation procedure will be sent to you automatically. You need to forward these to the course participants during your course(s). Evaluation is voluntary for both you and your students
and is conducted using an agreed-upon questionnaire from the department council. Students who wish to take part in the online evaluation can choose between a German and an English version.
