Arriving in Hamburg
By Airplane
The Hamburg Airport is situated in the north of the city. If you want to go directly to the conference location or the Hotel Vorbach you can take one of the following connections:
Train:
Take the S1 (Wedel/Blankenese) to Ohlsdorf and from there the U1 (Farmsen/Ohlstedt/Großhansdorf) to Hallerstraße, which is just in walking distance to the location (7 minutes in total).
Taxi:
Taxi stands are right in front of the Airport. The ride to the location will take about 25 minutes.
The Hotel Vorbach (Johnsallee 63) can be reached using the same connections. From the U1 station Hallerstraße it is only 8 minutes to the hotel. From the hotel to the location it is only 7 minutes.
By Train
If you arrive at Hamburg Central Station, you can take the U1 (Ohlsdorf/Norderstedt Mitte) to Hallerstraße.
Public Transportation
Find the timetable info for all lines run by the HVV here. Especially the line 62 ferry operating between Landungsbrücken and Finkenwerder is a nice and cheap way to get a view at Hamburg from the harbourside.
Free Time
Planten un Blomen
Planten un Blomen is one of Hamburg´s many parks and a popular time-out spot in the middle of the city. When there, you can have a walk through the themed gardens, take a break at the Japanese teahouse or simply enjoy the sun on one of the benches. The park is located in walking distance to the University (closest entrance right behind the Dammtor station).
Outer Alster
The Alster lake is one of Hamburgs trademarks and also in walking distance (10 min) to the University. Taking a walk all around the Outer Alster will take you approximately 1.5 hours.
Stadtrad/Citybike
The city of Hamburg offers a bike-sharing service called "Stadtrad" which you can use for free for the first 30 min of each ride. All you need to do is to download the Stadtrad-App and create an account. Stations can be found all over the city. At the university, the next stations are at Dammtor Station or at Grindelhof/Bornstraße.
E-Scooter
Besides public transport, E-Scooters are a convenient way to get around for short distances. The scooters do not have to be placed at specific stations but can be parked wherever you want. In order to use them, you must download an app and create an account with one of the multiple providers. Most providers charge a fee for unlocking and offer pay-per-minute or daily passes.

Colonial Places
Hamburg was the capital of Germany’s colonial enterprise and is now treading new paths as it reflects upon its colonial legacy. Where the Colonial Institute once trained people for service overseas, the research team at the research center for Hamburg’s (post-)colonial legacy headed by Prof. Dr. Jürgen Zimmerer has created an app that makes Hamburg’s colonial history accessible by smartphone.
