Abstract
This experimental study analyses the consequences of cheating at the workplace by examining how co-workers are affected when team members cheat. To this end, we establish a workplace scenario in which three individuals have to do a real-effort task in order to receive pay based on team performance. Between two work rounds, it is possible for two of them to obtain a bonus through a die game, which either allows for cheating or not. By studying worker behavior when cheating takes place, compared to when it does not, we analyze the possible implications of deception on team outcomes, without using deception as experimenters.
