About us
We welcome you to the website of the Chair of Political Science, in particular International Relations. As a sub-discipline of Political Science, International Relations (IB) deals with cross-border relations between states and non-state actors. IB, which is established as an independent discipline especially in Anglo-Saxon countries—hence the capitalization of the term—is as old as this university. The "Institute for Foreign Policy", founded in 1923 at the University of Hamburg, can be seen as one of the world's first peace research institutes, whereas colonial research going back further (e.g. through the Colonial Institute of 1908) served mainly economic interests. Today, these two lines of tradition, peace and conflict research as well as the study of international economic relations and questions of development theories and politics, form central elements in the self-image of the professorship.
On these pages you will find information about Prof. Dr. Cord Jakobeit and his staff. We provide information about the main research areas and projects as well as about the teaching offered.
